Steps on how to renew your Tax Clearance certificate on TaRMS.

Published: 9 May 2025

We have had a lot of online enquiries on how to renew Tax Clearance Certificate in TaRMS.To renew your tax clearance certificate with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) through the TaRMS platform, you generally need to follow these steps:

1. Access the TaRMS Self-Service Portal:

Go to the ZIMRA TaRMS Self-Service Portal website: https://mytaxselfservice.zimra.co.zw/

2. Log In:

Enter your username and password.
If you have forgotten your password or username, click on the respective “Forgot your password?” or “Forgot your username?” links and follow the prompts.

3. Navigate to Taxpayers Certificates module:

Once logged in, navigate to the section related to tax clearance certificates. Go to certificate requests

4. Apply for Renewal:

Find the option to “Renew Tax Clearance” or “Apply for General Tax Clearance.”
Click on this option and follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Review Your Compliance Status:

The system will likely assess your current tax compliance status. To be eligible for renewal, you need to ensure that:

  • All your tax returns are up to date. This includes Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Value Added Tax (VAT), Provisional Tax, and Income Tax returns for the relevant periods.
  • All your tax payments are up to date, and there are no outstanding balances.
  • If you have a payment plan with ZIMRA, ensure that it is up to date.
  • Your master data information with ZIMRA is correct and up to date (e.g., physical address, email address, telephone number, bank accounts, industry classification). You might need to update this information if there have been any changes.

6. Submit Your Application:

After reviewing your status and ensuring everything is in order, submit your application for tax clearance renewal through the portal.

7. Check Application Status:

You can usually check the status of your application within the TaRMS portal. Look for a “My History” or “My Submissions” section.

8. Print Your Tax Clearance Certificate:

Once your application is approved and the status shows as “Committed” or similar, there should be an option to “View Document” or “Print Tax Clearance.”
Click on this to generate and print your renewed tax clearance certificate.

Important Considerations:

  • Online System: As of early 2024, ZIMRA indicated that Tax Clearance Certificates (ITF263s) are primarily accessible through the new TaRMS platform for compliant taxpayers.
  • Compliance is Key: You must be compliant with all your tax obligations to obtain a tax clearance certificate.
  • There is no fee charged by ZIMRA for the issuance of a Tax Clearance Certificate. Be wary of anyone asking for payment.
  • Validity: Tax clearance certificates for large and medium clients typically expire on December 31st of each year, while for other taxpayers, they might be valid for 1 month,6 months  and 12 months from the date of issue depending with compliance.
  • Businesses who are compliant get tax clearance for the whole year most of the time.
  • System Updates: The TaRMS system is relatively new, so the exact navigation and features might be subject to updates.
  • Professional Bodies: Be aware that certain professional bodies in Zimbabwe now require a valid tax clearance certificate for the renewal or registration of practicing certificates.
